Language, when you need it

Part 1 — Multiple-Choice Cloze

A short text (~150 words) with 8 gaps. Choose A/B/C/D — usually testing collocation, phrasal verbs, near-synonyms or fixed phrases.

Part 2 — Open Cloze

A short text with 8 gaps. Write ONE word per gap — usually grammar (prepositions, articles, auxiliaries, pronouns, linkers).

Part 3 — Word Formation

A short text with 8 gaps. A stem word is given in CAPS at the end of each line — form the correct word (often with prefix, suffix, internal change or both) to fit the gap.

Part 4 — Key Word Transformations

6 items. Rewrite a sentence using a given key word, keeping the meaning the same. Your answer must be 3–6 words and include the key word UNCHANGED.

Part 5 — Reading · Multiple Choice (long text)

A long text (~700 words) with 6 four-option multiple-choice questions. Tests detail, inference, attitude, purpose and tone.

Part 6 — Reading · Cross-text Multiple Matching

Four short texts (A–D) on the same topic, expressing different opinions. Four questions ask which writer agrees, disagrees, or is alone in an opinion.

Part 7 — Reading · Gapped Text

A long text with 6 paragraphs removed. Choose where 6 paragraphs (from 7 — one is a distractor) fit. Tests cohesion and discourse.

Part 8 — Reading · Multiple Matching

A long text or several short texts with 10 questions. Match each question to the part of the text where the information is found.

Part 1 — The Essay (compulsory)

220–260 words. Discuss two of three given points on a topic, explaining which is most important and why. Formal register.

Part 2 — Proposal

220–260 words. Persuade a specific reader (boss, committee) to take action. Use headings, formal register, recommendation.

Part 2 — Report

220–260 words. Neutral register. Describe a situation factually and end with a recommendation. Use headings.

Part 2 — Review

220–260 words. Write a review (film, book, restaurant, app) for a specific publication and reader. Recommend or not.

Part 2 — Email / Letter

220–260 words. Respond to a situation (application, complaint, request for information) at the right register for the reader.

Part 1 — Listening · Short Extracts

Three short two-speaker extracts (about 1 minute each). Two multiple-choice questions per extract. Tests gist, attitude, feeling and detail.

Part 2 — Listening · Sentence Completion

A 3-minute monologue with 8 sentences to complete with 1–3 words taken from the recording.

Part 3 — Listening · Long Interview

A 4-minute interview (often two people) with 6 multiple-choice questions. Tests attitude, opinion, gist and detail tracked over time.

Part 4 — Listening · Multiple Matching

Five short monologues on a shared theme. Two tasks of 5 items each — match speakers to a main point (Task 1) and to a feeling/attitude (Task 2).

Part 1 — Speaking · Interview

2 minutes. Examiner asks short personal questions. Tests fluency, range and natural extension.

Part 2 — Speaking · Long Turn

1-minute uninterrupted turn on 2 of 3 photos plus a 30-second follow-up question to the other candidate (in pairs) or examiner (singleton).

Part 3 — Speaking · Collaborative Task

3 minutes discussion of a prompt (with 5 written cues) + 1 minute to reach a decision. With another candidate (or examiner in 1:1 set-ups).

Part 4 — Speaking · Discussion

4 minutes of wider discussion on the same theme as Part 3 with the examiner. Opinion, justification, abstract ideas.
